running on empty

April 26, 2010

today’s flickr blog features a gallery curated by greenkozi. “running on empty” is a beautiful, strangely fascinating, photographic collection of petrol stations, those beacons of light along the long lonely interstate highways that get us to where we’re heading, often when the roads are empty and the world is sleeping.

sandra juto

i thought that in the next few weeks i’d share some of my favourite places to visit on the net and what better place to start with than one of my favourite daily reads!

my favourite blog to visit for quite some time has been sandra juto’s. i love getting a glimpse into her daily life and it’s lovely to see all the details she notices in her daily wanderings. i’m all about the details. her photos are unassuming but acute and it feels like she really gets under the skin of gothenburg, the city she lives in.
i also love getting to see her daily creative process both at home and in her new studio.

sandra is so the bees-knees. have you seen her wrist worms? and her illustrations? she makes softies too.

i always feel happy after visiting her site. go have a look:
+her portfolio.
+her shop.
+and go here for her blog.
+she’s also on flickr.

Here are some more photos from last weekend. We were there to watch the WRC with B’s dad and my brother but our unit was across from the beach at Kirra. Two wonderful places to be in one weekend! Bonus. It was wonderful to have some time to explore and people-watch (my favourite was seeing all the people up in the trees at the Rally) and generally take our time.

Inspired by Maggie Mason’s Mighty Life List, I’m currently making up my own. It’s been interesting to put to paper what it is that I actually want out of life. Goals are good. And hopefully, I’ve got plenty of time to get to ticking those things off! Will share my own Life List soon.

Also, this made me smile: “mustache, a study“.

Now to tackle the rest of this week!

today was ok.

I seem to have finally shaken the last remnants of the flu (that had SO overstayed its visit) but I still can’t seem to get into the swing of things. Soon though. Hopefully.
I am however, happily making list after list for our soon-ish trip to Melbourne (Oct, ‘09) + our not-so-soon-ish trip to Poland & South Africa (March/April/May ’11). It’s all very exciting. Planning is half the fun, no?

Interestingness, elsewhere:

Ian Whitmore PhotographyIan Whitmore: I like both series in his portfolio (Nowhere & Channels).

Eleanor Hardwick PhotographyEleanor Hardwick: I’ve been following her work for a while. So pretty. Nice to see her profiled in this month’s Frankie.

The Maxx→  If you missed seeing The Maxx when it originally aired on MTV then you’re in luck! MTV has posted full episodes to its website, allowing viewers to revisit this highly under-rated series once again. I collected all the comics and watched the videos over and over (vhs!) and I never got sick of it. Go have a look. So good.

→ Hand written letters sent to a whole village anonymously. Goodness in hand written format!

→ Feature Shoot’s Friday theme: Birds. Strangely beautiful and sad too.

→ I’ve been having a few discussions lately about the topic of morality (in the media and in daily life) and this movie seems interesting if somewhat confronting. I think I’d like to see it. I’m on a little bit of a JM Coetzee kick after reading Diary of a Bad Year not too long ago. John Malkovich has always scared me a little though.

→ Also this.

See you soon.
